What I Learned About Lawn Aeration

Take a few seconds to look at your lawn. What do you see? Is your lawn looking worn and unhealthy? Is it turning a pale yellow to brown? You shake your head, totally bewildered. Every day you water your lawn, and just the other day, you put fertilizers on it. Where did you go wrong? My friend, rest assured that I also had the same problem, until I learned about this one particular thing: lawn aeration. It may sound very foreign to you, but lawn aeration is actually a very simple process that just about anyone can do.

Aeration simply is the process of punching holes into your lawn. This is done in order to loosen compacted soil, allowing water, oxygen and fertilizers to penetrate the soil and reach the roots of your lawn. Soil in your lawn gets compacted due to factors like heavy foot traffic that comes from walking and playing, passing automobiles, and activities like mowing.

Light rain and sprinkling water increase the bulk or density of the soil, causing compaction. When soil is compacted, there is decrease in air spaces, so very little air can get in. That is why aerating your lawn is important to permit better passage of air and water into the roots of your grass. Aerating also helps roots to grow and spread.

Lawn aeration is done by punching holes about 3 to 4 inches deep, frequently with rods or cylinders that force the plugs of soil out into the surface. This can be done using a manual aerator or a power aerator. A manual aerator has hollow cylinders that you can plunge into the soil to remove plugs or create holes. A power aerator is a commercial device that comes with spikes and coring features. The first time I learned about aeration, I knew right then and there what was causing my lawn problems. Aeration has helped me maintain the health and beauty of my lawn, and I am pretty sure it will do the same thing for you.

How to Aerate Lawn the Quick and Easy Way

Knowing how to aerate your lawn in important. If you live in a mountainous area or have poor soil, you can greatly improve it by aerating and you may even need to aerate once a year. When you aerate you allow more air, water, and nutrient direct access to the soil and the root system of the grass plants.

The easiest and most effective way to aerate your lawn is by using a mechanical coring aerator. These type of aerators pull plugs out of your soil. This allows your soil to absorb more water and gives clay soils room to expand in the summer time. You get the most benefit from aerating your lawn when you go over the whole lawn twice.

After aerating your soil is a great time to mow, fertilize, over seed and water your lawn. Most experts suggest you aerate your lawn every three years, but if you haven’t done it in a while, we recommend once per year for the first three years.

Landscaping Therapy For Anxiety

Complementary medicine refers to the extra treatment that could be used in conjunction with traditional forms of medicine. Incorporating complementary medicine with conventional medicine has been progressively creating a buzz. It is even being adopted in primary cancer facilities, as well as by self-help groups.

Gentle therapies, including massage, yoga, and other relaxation techniques, almost always help in relieving symptoms of many illnesses. A lot of people believe in the healing powers of complementary medicine, which is also known as holistic healing and/or integrative medicine.

In some instances, complementary medicine is confused with alternative medicine or alternative therapy. However, you must always be able to tell them apart. Complementary medicine has the recognition and approval of many medical professionals, unlike alternative therapy. In some cancer patients, complementary medicine may be given in conjunction with chemotherapy, while alternative medicine would replace chemotherapy and involves non-tested and non-approved treatments, which could be detrimental.

One of the many types of complementary medicine that could help in treating anxiety disorders is the Landscape Therapy. Such therapy involves the presentation of relaxing, peaceful landscapes to anxiety sufferers. It may also involve showing of sceneries that evoke tranquility and calmness.

If actual, physical landscapes are not readily available, then they could be shown in a dark room with the use of slide shows. Also, they could be presented in the form of artwork or art books. However, if you’re lucky enough to gain access to actual landscapes, then great.

Some individuals are able to plant flowers and vegetables in all the right places, thus giving them an attractive view. You can play around with the shapes and designs of lawns and gardens in your home. Everyone needs some gardening and landscaping in their places at least every year. If you can’t do this by yourself, you can hire a professional landscaper to provide your garden with a stunning look.

Mostly, you can do the gardening and landscaping. But there are some major works that need to get done on the lawn or garden, ones that you can’t do without professional help. Such works include irrigation or water source. Professional landscapers will help you with that. They will help you in avoiding additional anxiety and stress.

Regardless of the specific type of complementary medicine you prefer to explore, health experts still believe that it would be best that you seek advice from your doctor before starting on any kind of additional treatment. As long there is an effort on your part to treat your anxiety disorder, there will always be hope that you will get better. You will then be able to take control over your anxiety symptoms, instead of having them take control over your life.

How Alligator Loppers Saved my Life (or at Least a Limb)

Alligator LoppersIt’s been an easy winter here in upstate New York compared to past winters with very little snow, warm temperatures. We had had a few freak storms where the wind blew hard and the snow fell fast, but they were few and far in between. The most recent one, however, took down our apple tree with a vengeance.

Since the boyfriend was away and our neighborhood association prefers “eyesores” like this to be cleaned up before they happen I found myself in a quandary. I had never handled a chainsaw in my life. So, after thinking about my options and deciding that I wanted to do this myself without asking for help I took a deep breathe and climbed through all the junk in our garage. The chainsaw, of course, was all the way in the back on a shelf. I lifted it and…oh wow it was heavy. There was no way I’d be able to handle that without cutting off a limb–and I didn’t even know how to start it.

So I did a little research and found the tool that would save my life: the alligator lopper from Black & Decker. I ordered it and it arrived at the door the next day. What a thing of beauty. If you aren’t familiar with one of these machines it looks like and works similarly to a huge pair of scissors, except one blade (the top one) has a rotating saw blade (just like a chainsaw) and the other blade (the bottom one) is just a stabilizing arm. The bottom arm prevents what’s called kickback, which occurs with normal chainsaws if the blade gets pinched in the wood. As a reaction it will bounce forcefully back at you. Not fun.

Anyway, the alligator lopper weighs in at about 6.5 lbs which I knew I could handle because I lift at least eight at the gym! I chose to buy the one with the cord as it has a little more power than the cordless version and I wanted to be sure I had enough time to complete the job in one go. It cuts branches up to 4 inches in diameter, which was about the size of the apple tree so it was perfect. The loppers require little maintenance as well. When I finally got to using the loppers they cut through all parts of the tree without a problem. It was so easy that I finished in half the time I’d hoped.

All in all, I’ve officially fallen in love with the alligator loppers! I’m not too sure my boyfriend will be all that happy with that, but now I’ll be able to help him all around the yard with my very own power tool.

Learn How To Buy An Aerator From A Rental Company

One of the best things that you can do for your lawn is to have it aerated. If your soil is compacted, or has a lot of clay in it, then it may need to be aerated every other year. Using an aerator every year can be a hassle because you have to go and rent one, and you have to also pay for the rental. You can save yourself a little bit of money if you learn how to buy a used aerator rental and pay less for them.

If you’re in the market for a used aerator, you can usually get a good deal on an aerator rental. The key is to call around to several rental shops either at the end of the fall or before the start of spring. Rental companies will be upgrading their machines, and they may be getting rid of the ones that they do not make money off of.  This is a great time to buy an aerator because it is the off-season for aerators.

The rental companies know that the machines are just going to be sitting there for three or four months before they are used again. You can take the machines off of their hands for just a few hundred dollars in a lot of cases.

This is also a good time to buy a used power rake aside from aerator rentals. When you buy a used aerator, the most important thing to know is that you can tell how much use is on the aerator by how long the tines are. As the tines wear down and become short, they also give you fat plugs. I would never buy a used aerator that has very short tines that make very fat plugs. If this is the case, you may end up having to replace all of your tines within the next year.

Another thing to look for when you buy an aerator is that you want to make sure that it has a good quality engine. Make sure that it sounds right and that it starts up right away. I prefer to buy aerator rentals that come with a Honda engine. Honda engines tend to last twice as long as Briggs and Stratton engines do.  In addition, Honda engines will shut themselves off if they get too hot or if there is not enough oil in them.  Try not to pay more than five or $600 for used aerator. If you pay more than that, then you are paying way too much.

How To Install Sod: Crucial And Vital Information

Before you order sod, there is a lot that you need to know about how to install it. The first step on how to install sod is to prepare the soil. Don’t bother ordering the sod until you have prepared your soil. If you do, there’s a good chance that it will take you a long time to finish, and in the meantime the sod will just sit there and get old. That is the last thing that you want to do. Typically, you want to have the sod cut and installed on the same day.

In order to prepare your soil, you’re going to want to start either by killing everything that exists on your lawn, by using Round-up, or by carrying it out with a sod cutter. Round-up is the easier way to do it, but using a sod cutter to get rid of the sod is actually somewhat better.

When you use a sod cutter, you take out some of the soil with a sod. This means that if you want to, you can bring in top soil to replace it fairly easily. Usually you want to have your sod cut out and hauled away before you add new soil. When you add new organic topsoil, you also need to use a rototiller to turn the soil in your yard.

After rototilling, you want to make sure that the soil is completely graded and leveled. It may take you several hours to get the perfect grade or level on your soil. That is alright, because what’s more important is to go slow and do a good job so you can have a very nice-looking yard when you finish.

The next step is installing sod on top of your graded soil. Before you install the sod, you may also want to put down some starter fertilizer and some lime to help the new roots to grow and get established. When you roll the sod off, try and keep it as level as possible.

Start on a straight edge, and then work your way back. Make sure that all of your sod bumps up against the other pieces so that there are no gaps. When you’re installing your second row of sod, try and stagger the layers so that they hold each other in place better.

Once all the sod is installed try not to walk on your lawn for at least3 to 4 weeks, until you have to mow it. This will help the lawn to get established and keep the sod pieces from moving around.
